Kalamazoo set to host 2019 USA Curling National Championships

(STEVENS POINT, Wis.) – USA Curling’s National Championships will make a return to Kalamazoo, Mich., for the third time as the 2019 Nationals will take place at Wings Event Center.

“From the first time we took the USA Curling Nationals there in 2010, Kalamazoo has been an exceptional destination for these championships,” said Rick Patzke, USA Curling chief executive officer. “As the Kalamazoo slogan says, ‘You’ll be Back. We Promise.’ With Discover Kalamazoo and the Kalamazoo Curling Club as core partners again, coupled with the dedicated staff at Wings Event Center, I have no doubt that these Nationals will be even better than the first two held there.”

Kalamazoo, which hosted the 2015 and 2010 National Championships, will stage the weeklong championship at The Valley, an NHL-size ice arena with bleacher seating.

USA Curling and the Kalamazoo Curling Club will partner with Discover Kalamazoo and Wings Event Center staff to host the championship, which will take place Feb. 9-16, 2019.

“We are honored USA Curling has selected Kalamazoo and Wings Event Center to host this prestigious national championship,” said Greg Ayers, president and chief executive officer of Discover Kalamazoo.  “In partnership with the Kalamazoo Curling Club, we look forward to welcoming the nation’s finest curlers to Kalamazoo for the third time in ten years.”

The weeklong national event features the top men’s and women’s teams in the country and helps determine Team USA for the subsequent World Championships. The 2019 World Women’s Championship will take place in Esbjerg, Denmark, while Canada will host the 2019 Ford World Men’s Championship. The 2018 Nationals are taking place in March at Scheels Arena in Fargo, N.D.

“The Kalamazoo Curling Club is excited about continuing the tradition of providing our top curling athletes a great experience and bringing championship curling back to Kalamazoo,” said Marcus Gleaton, president of the Kalamazoo Curling Club, which calls The Zoo, an adjacent ice rink, its home.

Prior to Kalamazoo hosting in 2015 and 2010, Detroit was the only other Michigan city to host the National Championships after holding the event three times (1989, 1975, 1962).

USA Curling is sponsored by AtomOS, Nike, Brooms Up Curling Supplies, CryoMAX 8-Hour Cold Pack, Sitrin, The RAM Restaurant & Brewery, BalancePlus, and Brakebush, and is partnered with Thorne Research, Laurie Artiss Ltd. – The Pin People, United Airlines, 12th End Sports Network, and CurlingZone.
